Are you someone that loves to stay fit, but hates paying the extortionate prices for gym membership?
According to, over 25 million Americans exercise at home. Although the numbers have fallen in the past 10 years since 2006, there has been a steady increase in the past years, most noticeably from 2011. Despite these numbers, the USA also has the highest amount of health clubs compared to any other nation, followed by Brazil.

The main advantage of home workouts is that in the long term, it is a cheaper alternative to working out at a gym. I mentioned in the long term’, because working out at home will mean purchasing equipment such as, weights (dumbbells, barbell, kettle), workout bench, workout mat and any other equipment needed for your workout.
So, whilst your $50 a month gym membership might have come to an end, you will still need to fork-out a lot of money on equipment. Not only will the price be a disadvantage, but knowing what you will need will have to be considered too. For example, if you purchase 20 KG weights, but you want to increase the weight, this means purchasing more weights. Whereas, if you were in a gym you have access to various sized weights.
The problem with going to the gym is that people usually join because they feel as though they need to. Instead of actually wanting to. You see, there is a difference. Needing to might come down to being persuaded by other people, or by simply not being happy with one’s appearance. People in general feel as though throwing money at a situation will make it better. I read an article on the Huffington Post at about such a thing. Although the writer made the point in regards to education, the matter still remains the same; throwing money at something does not solve the problem.
Perhaps the idea of throwing money at a health club that they attend is a reason why so many Americans feel the need to workout at home.
Another reason might be down to the fact they might be embarrassed. Such feelings might also be the reason why 78.6 million Americans are obese too. If you are overweight or even underweight, the thought of hitting the gym where there are people that are in great shape will be daunting.
Whatever your reason, there are plenty of opportunities online to learn how to workout at home. You don’t necessarily need weights or much equipment. There are loads of exercises that can be done at home that require just yourself; such as, press-ups, sit-ups and squats.

Although, equipment isn’t a necessity, it does help. If you don’t feel like spending hundreds of dollars on equipment, then that’s fine. You can always buy small and gradually add to your collection, depending on what exercises you are doing. Medicine balls and treadmills are popular choices for those wanting to workout at home.
Finding the time to workout at home can be tricky if you have a family to look after, but at the end of the day, your health is just as important. So, even if it’s just half an hour; a simple workout at home can relieve stress, improve your health and your well being – minus the burden of travelling to a health club.
